POS Data Backup Checklist
A backup file is useful only if you can restore it when needed. Agree responsibilities and practise recovery before an incident.
Adapt the 3-2-1 approach
Aim for multiple copies of critical data on different media, with at least one copy in a separate location. Set retention according to business requirements and applicable obligations. Keep backup access separate from routine cashier access.
Monitor scheduled jobs
A responsible person should receive a failure notification. Check integrity, size and transfer results as well as file creation. Keep a record of the most recent successful backup so a missing job is noticeable.
- Last successful backup
- File integrity
- Remote copy
- Failure notification
Practise restoring safely
Restore periodically into an isolated environment that cannot affect production. Check the recovered sales and inventory data, record the time required, and document access and responsibilities before they are needed in an emergency.
