How to Choose Retail POS Software
Choosing retail software starts with your daily workflow. Test the checkout, stock movements and support conditions before deciding.
Test the checkout workflow
During a busy shift, measure how many steps it takes to find a product, scan a barcode, split a payment, return an item or hold a sale. Ask a new cashier to complete the same scenarios; a polished screen alone does not show how easily a team can learn the system.
- Find items without barcodes
- Combine cash and card payments
- Record permissions for cancellations and returns
Trace inventory movements
Stock is more than the current quantity. Follow purchases, sales, counts, waste, transfers and returns, including who recorded each movement and when. Check that warehouse and branch balances remain distinguishable and that a count discrepancy can be traced.
- Separate warehouses and branches
- Review low-stock lists
- Record count differences
Confirm devices and support
Before installation, verify scanner, scale, label printer and fiscal payment device compatibility by exact make and model. Agree backup frequency, retention, restore responsibility and support conditions in writing. Test at least one restore in a safe environment.
